Here is a letter we received from a mom in pain for her sons girlfriend who is self harming. We rarely post the many letters that we receive but this one is urge and will help others to see how deep this problem is.

My son has just split with his girl friend because of her self harming he cant cope with it as he doesnot know how to help her so he left i am mother of my son we have never been involved with any one who does this but i dont want to leave her on her own as she slashed her wrist today after she had clawed half my son body and neck and face….. but even though she has done this we really need to get her help can please help us what to do to help her ….thank you
SPIRIT HAPPY RESPONSE to teen cutting: This girl is in deep pain and has an emotional issue that has not be dealt with. There is more to this girl than the anger out burst. She is upset and the problem is an underlying pain and dissatisfaction. Your son is the anchor for this girl’s reality. He is the one who she needs and uses the most. This is actually why she beats on him. It is strange but she needs him in so many ways. He is close to getting her to the truth of her pain. She must find it not him.
The situation is not good because she has her own pain that she must face. I am sure a parent is a major problem in her life. This girl feels backed up against a wall and is scratching her way out. Love Source and Others
Cutting is not something that has to do with being abused in any way. Teens don’t cut just because someone in their life hurt them. They could just be hurting themselves. I was/ kinda still am a cutter. I don’t think that anyone except people who cut will understand our reasoning’s. Some people cut because they feel pain inside and they don’t know how to deal with it, some may be upset with themselves and want to take it out, but they cant so they take it out on themselves. I have friends. I have a good family. I am surrounded by people that love me. But I hate myself. I have done many bad things in life. I hurt myself because I think I deserve it.
Sorry to hear that you are cutting but I can assure you that all cutters have been abused. The number one cause is emotional abuse. You stated that you hate yourself,
If you hate yourself trust me you have been abused, there is not one person who is born hating themselves. “Others” cause you to hate yourself or Our “actions” cause us to hate ourselves. It can even be caused from the media influence or from school classmates. You say you have done many “bad things in your life”
Your reaction to the “bad things” you have done has been to abuse yourself. The guilt you feel from your “bad things” is because you were not created to do bad things. You were created to Love your Creator and Others…period.
You say you have a “Good Family” What is good? Do they Provide money..education..shelter or Love? Those are good things but not enough…if you were not taught to love your “Creator and Others” you are missing your purpose
You were “Created for a purpose” when you discover this you will not cut
